Why should I not neglect the use of the letter 'ё' in Russian? EN + RU
Often, people, especially native Russian speakers, instead of using the letter 'ё', use just 'е'. In one example, I'll demonstrate how this can result in entirely different words.
EN:
In many languages, there are letters with diacritical marks. The same applies to the Russian language. The letter 'ё' always represents a stressed vowel. However, in written communication, many people tend to avoid using this letter and substitute it with the letter 'е'.
Here is an example of avoiding the use of 'ё' in a text:
Let's compare two words: 'небо' and 'нёбо'. Both have the stress on the first syllable, but 'нёбо' has a softer sound. And that's not the only difference. These two words have completely different meanings.
'Небо' means 'sky':
And 'нёбо' means 'palate', the inner upper part of the mouth:
We can see the vastly different meanings of these similar words. Therefore, I would recommend not avoiding the use of the two dots above the letter 'е' in your texts. 😉
Compare how they both sound:
RU:
